Smart cameras

The AI inside your phone camera

Like I’m 5

When you take a photo, your phone does lots of clever tricks in a blink. It finds faces, fixes blur and brightens the dark parts, all with AI.

The big idea

A phone camera has a tiny lens, so its raw pictures are often noisy or dark. AI helps by combining several quick shots into one clear photo and by recognising what's in the scene, like faces, sky or food.

Once it knows what's in the picture, the camera adjusts each part differently: smoother skies, sharper faces, brighter shadows. Photo apps also use AI to search your pictures for words like 'beach' or 'birthday cake'.

Examples

  • Night mode: Several shots are blended so a dark street looks clear.
  • Portrait mode: AI finds the person and blurs the background.
  • Photo search: Type 'dog' and your phone finds every dog picture.

How it works

  1. The camera takes several quick shots.
  2. AI works out what's in the scene, like faces or sky.
  3. It blends and adjusts the shots into one clear photo.

Check your understanding

How does night mode make dark photos clearer?
Options: It blends several quick shots together; It switches on the sun; It paints the photo by hand.
Answer: It blends several quick shots together. Combining many shots reduces noise and brightens the picture.
How can your phone find all your photos of dogs?
Options: AI recognised dogs in the pictures; You labelled every photo yourself; It reads your mind.
Answer: AI recognised dogs in the pictures. Image recognition labels what's in each photo so you can search.

Remember

Phone cameras use AI to understand the scene and blend shots into clearer photos.

Talk about it

Find a photo on a phone and guess which AI tricks helped take it.

Go deeper

This is called computational photography. It combines burst capture, alignment and merging (to reduce noise) with segmentation models that separate people, sky and background so each can be processed differently.
