Privacy and your data

What apps know about you

Like I’m 5

Your personal details are like the key to your house. You only give the key to people you really trust.

The big idea

Apps collect lots of data: your location, photos, searches and messages. AI can combine scraps of data to guess things you never shared, like your routine or interests.

Protect yourself: check app permissions, share less, use strong passwords and think before posting photos with your school uniform or address visible. You can often ask companies to delete your data.

Examples

  • Location: A photo can reveal where you are from hidden data or background details.
  • Permissions: A torch app shouldn't need your contacts.
  • Guessing: Liking certain posts can let AI guess your age or mood.

How it works

  1. Apps can collect lots of data: what you tap, where you go, and what you say to a chatbot.
  2. Some of it may be stored, shared or used to train AI. Settings often let you switch some of this off.
  3. Never share passwords, addresses or private photos, and check privacy settings with a grown-up.

Check your understanding

Which is a smart privacy habit?
Options: Checking your privacy settings; Sharing passwords with apps; Posting your home address.
Answer: Checking your privacy settings. Settings help you control what apps collect and share.
A simple game asks to read all your contacts. What should you do?
Options: Say no, because it doesn't need them; Allow everything; Share your password too.
Answer: Say no, because it doesn't need them. Only give apps permissions they genuinely need.

Remember

Share less, check settings, protect your details.

Go deeper

Personal data is anything that identifies you, and laws such as the EU’s GDPR and India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act give people rights over it. Many AI services let you opt out of having your chats used for training; sharing less and reading the privacy policy are your best defences.
