AI in health and science
Helping doctors and scientists
Like I’m 5
AI is like a helper with sharp eyes that never gets tired. It can help doctors spot tiny clues in X-rays, but the doctor still decides.
The big idea
Doctors look at X-rays, scans and test results to find illness. AI can help by spotting tiny patterns in these images, quickly and without getting tired, then pointing doctors to things worth a closer look.
AI also helps scientists. A program called AlphaFold predicted the 3D shapes of proteins, which helps researchers design medicines faster. But in healthcare, people always check and make the final decisions.
Examples
- Eye checks: AI can spot early signs of eye disease in photos of the back of the eye.
- Scan reading: It highlights areas on a scan for the doctor to check.
- Protein shapes: AlphaFold's predictions helped scientists around the world.
How it works
- AI can look at scans like X-rays and point out spots a doctor should check more closely.
- Scientists use AI to predict the shapes of proteins, which helps them design new medicines.
- AI helps, but doctors and scientists check its work and make the final decisions.
Check your understanding
- Who makes the final decision about a patient?
- Options: The doctor; The AI; The X-ray machine.
Answer: The doctor. AI can point out clues, but trained people check them and decide. - Who makes the final decision about a patient's treatment?
- Options: The doctor; The AI; The X-ray machine.
Answer: The doctor. AI helps spot patterns, but trained doctors decide.
Remember
AI helps experts spot patterns. People make the final call.
Talk about it
Why should a doctor, not an AI, make the final decision?
Go deeper
Medical AI is tested for how many real problems it catches and how many false alarms it raises, and often needs regulatory approval before use. AlphaFold predicted structures for most known proteins, speeding up biology research. Risks include biased training data and over-reliance, so human oversight stays essential.
